Supreme Court Adjourns Naira Redesign Case till March 3

The supreme court of Nigeria has Adjourned the naira redesign suit until March 3,2023.

The Apex court on Wednesday adjourned the suit filed by state governments against the Federal Government, challenging the implementation of the policy.

At the hearing of the matter, the court consolidated the suits instituted by ten state governments after the motion for the consolidation was argued by Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), Counsel for Rivers State

The Abia State Government also applied to be joined in the suit, but the plea was turned down. The judge ordered it to present its case at a later date.

Kanu Agabi, FG’s counsel said the apex court held rgar reliefs were made from section 20 of CBN Act hence, the apex does not have jurisdiction to the suit. 

He said the action cannot commence without an Originating Summons.

Background 

Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara filed the petition seeking to restrain the FG from giving effect to the deadline for the ban of the N1,000, N500 and N200 notes . 

They approached the court in an ex-parte order seeking to stop the stop the ban. 

In their arguments, they averred that the implementation of the policy has caused Nigerians much hardship. 

On February 8,the Supreme Court restaraknss tge CBN from giving effect to the order. 

Several states in Nigeria also approached the court seeking to be joined in the suit 

The apex court in its decision joined Katsina, Ondo, Ekiti,Lagos Cross River and Ogun. 

Also joined as co-defendants are Edo and Bayela. 

plaintifs in the suit now include: The attorneys general (AGs) of Kaduna,Kogi, Zamfara,Ondo,Ekiti,Katsina,Ogun,Cross River, Sokoto and Lagos States.

The defendants are: The attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami alongside the AGs of Bayelsa and Edo state .
