Court orders unconditional release of Emefiele

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has issued an order for the immediate and unconditional release of the Godwin Emefiele.

The order for the realease of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), came on Friday.

The court gave the order following an ex-parts motion filled by his lawyer to secure his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This is pending the determination of the Originating Motion.

Background

The court proceedings revolve around Emefiele’s plea, with the applicant naming the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, and the EFCC itself as respondents.

The following order was issued by the court;

The court mandated the Executive Chairman and the EFCC to offer a prompt and unconditional release of Emefiele from detention.

In the alternative, the court directed them to present him in court on the date scheduled for the hearing of the substantive Motion on Notice.

The court has scheduled the hearing of the Substantive Motion on Notice for Monday, November 6, 2023, at 1 pm.
