Supreme Court to Hear 21 Governorship Appeals This Week

The Supreme Court has slated hearings for 21 appeals related to disputes stemming from the recent governorship elections.

The cases, spanning Ebonyi, Plateau, Delta, Adamawa, Abia, Ogun, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states, are scheduled to unfold throughout the week, with judgments on previously heard post-election appeals expected on Friday.

Background

On Monday, the apex court has already begun proceedings, addressing an appeal by the candidate of APGA, along with two appeals by the PDP and its candidate, Chukwuma Odii Ifeanyi.

Additionally, two appeals by the APC and its candidate in Benue state are on the docket.

Today, the court will delve into six appeals, three concerning Plateau State and filed by the PDP, its candidate Nentawe Goshwe, and INEC.

Three more appeals relating to Delta State will be heard, filed by Kenneth Gbagi of the SDP, Omo-Agege Ovie Augustine of the APC, and Peta Kennedy of the LP.

Wednesday’s agenda includes four appeals, two connected to Adamawa State, filed by the SDP candidate and a counter appeal by the incumbent, Ahmadu Fintiri of the PDP.

Thursday’s proceedings encompass six appeals, featuring two for Ogun State filed by Oladipo Adebutu of the PDO and a counter appeal by the incumbent governor, Abiodun Adedapo of the APC.

Additionally, an appeal concerning Cross River by Prof. Sandy Onor of the PDP and two appeals for Akwa Ibom State by Akpan Udofia of the YPP and John Akpan Udoedehe of the NNPC are set for consideration.

The week concludes with the Supreme Court delivering judgments on Friday for post-election governorship appeals already heard, including cases related to Lagos, Kano, and other states.

This unfolding legal process holds significant implications for the political landscape in these states, as the highest court in the land will deliver a final verdict on these electoral disputes.
