The Federal Capital Territory High Court Abuja on Monday granted 100 Million Naira in favor of the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele.

The court ruled against that the violation of Emefiele’s right to personal liberty deserves compensation.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, in delivering the judgment, affirmed that the prolonged detention of Emefiele without trial constitutes a flagrant violation of his fundamental human rights.

The court further prohibited the Federal Government and its agents from arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.

This ruling stems from a fundamental human rights lawsuit initiated by the former CBN governor in response to his extended detention by the Department of State Services.

Though Emefiele sought the court to order the FG to pay him N1 billion in damages, the court only awarded N100 million.
