Court grants Doguwa N500m bail

Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, has been granted bail in the sum of N500m.

The jurist had reported that Doguwa was charged with culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and breach of public peace.

The rep’s leader allegedly led thugs, who attacked and set on fire the office of the New Nigeria People`s Party at Tudun Wada, Kano, where two people were reportedly burnt to death while the collation of results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections was underway.

The bail was granted to Doguwa yesterday by Justice Muhammad Yunusa.

He was admitted to bail following an application by Nuraini Jimoh (SAN) his lawyer, who argued that his client was presumed to be innocent pursuant to the provisions of Section 35 (6) of the Constitution.

After granting the bail application, Justice Yunusa ordered that Doguwa drops his passport with the court’s registry pending the conclusion of his trial and must provide two sureties who should be a first-class emir and senior officer in civil service.

The lawmaker was restricted from going to his constituency for the March 11 governorship and state House Assembly elections.

Doguwa is facing six counts bordering on culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, mischief by firearm, and inciting disturbances.
