A state high court in Benin has ordered the Labour Party (LP) and its members to stop any proposed suspension of its national officers.

The court gave the order pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

LP’s lawyer, G. C. Igbokwe, SAN told newsmen that he has secured a High Court order that the status quo be maintained.

He said the court ordered that no further action be taken on suspending any of the LP National officers.

He said “Our attention has been drawn to a latter order purportedly from another court of equal jurisdiction restraining my clients. Of course, such order is of no consequence and will have no effect until after the determination of the motion on notice.”

Background

On Monday, LP leaders of Edo state, which comprises the state, local government, and Ward executives issued a vote of no confidence on Abure, who got suspended by a factional group of the party.

It was reported that the same faction that claimed to be a ward three executive led by Chairman, Martins Osigbemhe, also had declared the suspension of the party’s national chairman.

During a solidarity visit to Abure in Abuja, the chairman of the Edo state chapters of the party, Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi said the faction led by Osugbemhe is not recognized by the party and has no legitimacy to remove any official in the party.

The state chapter declared that the unknown faction is working against the party and are an opposition group.

Ogbaloi opined that Abure is an elected chairman of the party and cannot be removed by “imposters”.

“imposters “who are not registered party members cannot suspend him, so their action is out of ignorance. Those who did it don’t even understand the message they were asked to deliver.” Ogbaloi stated.
