Court arraigns man for raping daughter`s friend

Wisdom Emmanuel, has been remanded by a Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly abducting and raping daughter’s friend in his office.

Emmanuel was arraigned in court on Wednesday on two counts bordering on sexual violation, which was brought against him by the state Police command.

When he appeared in court, Magistrate Patrick Nwaka did not take the defendant`s plea but ordered his remand.

Background

On April 30, 32 years old, Emmanuel sexually assaulted his daughter’s friend in his office, around 10 am at No. 46, Kusa Street, Bariga, Lagos State.

According to the police, the defendant tricked the young lady into his office before raping her.

The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, said the defendant approached the lady’s parents in a bid to allow her take him to his daughter`s office but instead took her to his office, around Fadeyi where he made her undress and raped her.

Nurudeen told the court that the act of the defendant violated Sections 141 and 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015, and is punishable under the same law.

The charge read, “That you, Wisdom Emmanuel, on April 30, 2023, around 10am at No. 46, Kusa Street, Bariga, Lagos state, in the Yaba Magisterial District did abduct one 13-year-old girl, (name withheld) under the custody of her parents and took her to your place of work located at Fadeyi area, with the intent to have unlawful carnal knowledge of her, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 141 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

He further prayed the court to remand the defendant for 30 days till legal advice will be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Court’s decision

Though the defendant`s plea was not taken, the Magistrate ordered that he be remanded immediately.

The case was further adjourned till June 19, 2023.
