Nigerian Supreme court on fire

A fire broke out on Monday,  in a section of Justice Mohammed Saulawa’s Supreme Court chambers.

In the early hours of Monday, court’s spokesperson Festus Akande reported that fire extinguishers, quickly contained the incident.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, despite some false information circulating online.

The fire damaged three offices, including Justice Mohammed Saulawa’s.

Cleaners and early arriving staff noticed the flames and raised the alarm.

They however, managed to control the fire using extinguishers within the building.

The suspected cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault in one of the justices’ chambers, although this has not been officially confirmed.

About the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court stands tall as the ultimate arbiter of legal disputes in the nation.

Established under the 1979 Constitution, the Supreme Court is the apex court of Nigeria, with its origins tracing back to the colonial era.

Comprising a Chief Justice and a varying number of Justices, the Supreme Court is the final court of appeal for all matters, both civil and criminal.

Its jurisdiction extends across the diverse landscape of Nigeria, unifying the nation under the umbrella of justice.

Over the years, the court has played a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape of Nigeria.

It has delivered landmark judgments on constitutional matters, electoral disputes, and other critical issues, often setting precedents that reverberate throughout the nation’s legal framework.

It is the highest and at the apex of the hierarchy of courts in Nigeria.

Over time, this court has enjoyed a distinct measure of sanctity and respect.

This is partly because it holds the symbol of the judicial profession and also because it serves as the ultimate court of appeal, with no further exception than God.

In the past week, the Supreme court has been in the news as the PDP presidential candidate and the LP presidential candidate had gone forward to file their petition against President Bola Tinubu as the appellate court had dismissed their petition.
