Alleged bribery: U.K court grants Alison-Madueke £70,000 bail

The Westminster Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom has granted former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, bail.

The court on Monday granted Alison bail in the sum of £70,000.

Allison-Madueke who was a minister between  2010 to 2015 during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan appeared before the court over an alleged £100,000 bribe.

However, she did not enter a plea on Monday but the court imposed some restrictions among which is the movement curfew. 

Her movements are restricted between 11 pm to 6 am and she is directed to wear an  electronic tag at all times.  

Background 

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) had in August said is suspected to have received bribes to award oil and gas contracts. 

The agency revealed that “Allison-Madueke is alleged to have benefitted from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, flights on private jets, luxury holidays for her family, and the use of multiple London properties”.

Her charges also detail financial rewards including furniture, renovation work and staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and gifts from high-end designer shops such as Cartier jewellery and Louis Vuitton goods”.

In March 2023,  the NCA availed the U.S department of justice evidence that helped in recovering assets worth $53.1 million.  

This assets were linked to Allison-Madueke’s alleged corruption.
