The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S.A. Amobeda, has handed down sentence to a notorious drug trafficker.
Muhammad Sambo who was sentenced on Monday bagged a 10-year jail term.
Sambo was among the seven individuals involved in drug trafficking arrested by the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) earlier in October.
Background
Talking to newsmen, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, explained that;
Sambo’s conviction and the subsequent 10-year jail term sends a powerful message to those involved in the illegal trade and transportation of cannabis and other illicit substances.
The NDLEA commander has been resolute in efforts to eliminate illicit drug activities in the state, making it abundantly clear that Kano is not a safe haven for such activities.
The statement provided details of Sambo’s arrest, revealing that the operation involved transporting significant quantities of cannabis sativa from southern states, particularly Ondo, to the northern regions.
He was apprehended on October 11, 2023, when NDLEA officers on patrol along the Kano-Zaria Road became suspicious and stopped a Honda Accord that initially refused to halt.
After a pursuit, Sambo was arrested in the Hotoro area of Kano State.
Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of 201kg of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa in Sambo’s vehicle.
Concurrently, the suspect’s true identity and his residence in Lokogoma, Abuja, were later confirmed.
Laboratory tests on the substance provided concrete evidence, confirming it as cannabis sativa.
Eventually, this solidified the case against Sambo, and he was found guilty of trafficking cannabis sativa, a clear violation of the NDLEA Act.
