How Court of Appeal sacked Bauchi deputy speaker

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the election of the Bauchi State deputy Speaker. Jamilu Barade.

The court in its verdict, ordered a rerun in some polling units in the state.

On November 24, the appellate court sacked the speaker Abubakar Y Suleiman and ordered a rerun in his constituency, Ningi Central.

However, In a late Monday judgment, the appellate court’s three-man panel overturned the Bauchi State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal’s verdict.

The verdict previously confirmed Barade of the Peoples Democratic Party as the duly elected representative for Bauchi Central State constituency.

The APC candidate, dissatisfied with the tribunal’s dismissal of his petition alleging over voting in nine polling units, appealed the decision.

The Appeal Court ruled in his favor, directing a rerun in several polling units and instructing INEC to retrieve the Deputy Speaker’s Certificate of Return for the affected units before determining the ultimate winner. Subsequently, the court mandated new elections in specific polling units where the APC appellant, Aliyu Ilela, also raised concerns about over-voting.
