The Nigerian Supreme Court has nullified the acquittal of Nnamdi Kanu, the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The Apex court on Friday set aside the judgement of the Court of Appeal that discharged and acquitted Kanu of charges related to treasonable felony.
The Supreme Court cited certain illegalities, including the invasion of Kanu’s home and the controversial manner of his return to Nigeria, as grounds for nullifying the acquittal.
A five-member panel of the Supreme Court ordered the continuation of the terrorism trial against Kanu.
The panel in a unanimous decision, asserted that while the federal government’s forceful return of Kanu from Kenya was deemed “irresponsible,” there is no legislation preventing the trial court from proceeding with the case.
