Today, the Supreme Court is set to deliver judgment on the appeals lodged by both the federal government and the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
On October 5, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, leading a five-member panel, selected this date following final submissions by Tijani Gazali (SAN) for the federal government and Mike Ozekhome (SAN) for Kanu.
Kanu seeks the Supreme Court to affirm the Court of Appeal’s judgment, supporting his discharge and acquittal, while the federal government urges the court to overturn the same judgment.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja, in its October 13, 2022 ruling, criticized the manner of Kanu’s return, faulting the federal government’s actions and quashing the remaining charges in the treasonable felony case.
The Appeal Court found that the government violated rules and breached international laws, ordering Kanu’s release.
However, the federal government obtained a stay of execution from the Court of Appeal pending the determination of its appeal.
