The Supreme Court has set January 9th, 2024, to hear the appeals in the contentious Plateau State Gubernatorial election.
This development follows a legal battle where the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured victory at the tribunal, only to face a reversal as the All Progressives Congress (APC) triumphed at the Appeal Court.
The upcoming Supreme Court session is poised to determine the rightful winner and bring resolution to the heated electoral dispute.
Background
The electoral duel unfolded on March 18, 2023, with Caleb Mutfwang of the PDP securing 525,299 votes, surpassing the 481,370 votes garnered by Goshwe of the APC.
However, Goshwe contested the election results, bringing the case to the tribunal. His claims included challenging Mutfwang’s nomination and sponsorship by the PDP, asserting that the election did not align with the electoral act and alleging that Mutfwang did not legitimately win the majority of votes cast.
The tribunal initially ruled in favor of Mutfwang, upholding his victory.
Subsequently, the appellate court however, overturned this decision, placing the APC back in contention.
