The High Court of FCT, Abuja, has issued an order barring Pedro Chibuzo Obi and Ekundina Elvis from parading themselves as the National President and Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The court’s verdict declares their actions misleading and damaging to the organization’s reputation, establishing a precedent with far-reaching implications.

Background

Reflecting on the recent NANS election, held in Abuja last week, the association’s national convention witnessed a tumultuous event marred by crisis.

The intense electoral contest, primarily between two candidates from Delta State Lucky Emonefe and Pedro Chibuzo Obi , resulted in fatalities and numerous students left bedridden at the National Hospital in Abuja.

Court’s decision

Highlighting the court’s decision, Hon. Justice O.A Musa emphasized the duo’s use of a false student leader status to sway decisions affecting students’ lives.

This calculated influence, as noted by the court, inflicted significant harm on the Nigerian student community both at home and abroad.

In response to the court’s findings, Pedro and Elvis are now mandated to cease all activities related to student leadership.

The court warned of stringent penalties for any future violations, sending a clear message against exploiting positions for personal gain.

This decision, a beacon for student rights, is poised to reshape the landscape of student leadership in Nigeria.

As part of the procedural course, the case has been returned to the Honorable Chief Judge for re-assignment, ensuring a fair and unbiased continuation of proceedings.

Meanwhile, the court has issued a directive for all parties involved in the suit to maintain peace and adhere to the status quo until the substantive hearing unfolds.

This procedural move aims to preserve stability and prevent any further disruptions during the legal process.
