Rivers Assembly Grants Approval for Resigned Commissioners

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, granted approval on Wednesday for nine commissioners who had resigned from their positions to “take a bow and go.”

This decision came in accordance with an 8-point peace agenda agreed upon after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

The commissioner-nominees, including Zacchaeus Adangor, Dr. Jacobson Mbina, Dr. Gift Worlu, Mrs. Inime Chinwenwo-Aguma, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom, Dr. George-Kelly D. Alabo, Hon. Isaac Kamalu, and Engr. Austin Ben Chioma, were invited for screening during a session at the Legislative Quarters in Port Harcourt.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s request for the screening and confirmation of the commissioner nominees was presented by the Speaker, who read the letter dated December 11, 2023.

The clarity in the letter’s date effectively resolved any controversy regarding the governor’s request.

Major Jack, the Majority Leader of the House, moved a motion asserting that, as the nominees had undergone screening previously, there was no need to repeat the process.

The motion received support from Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Dumle Maol, leading to the decision for the commissioner-nominees to “take a bow and go.”

Expressing concern during the session, Speaker Amaewhule highlighted the refusal of the Government House staff in Port Harcourt to accept correspondence from the House.

He warned that continued defiance of the law could prompt the Assembly to take necessary action.

The House declared that if the governor’s staff persist in defying the law, the Assembly would reciprocate by declining to receive any correspondence from Governor Fubara.
