A Federal High Court has frozen Kano State accounts due to the State’s failure to pay N30 billion in compensation for the Filling Idi demolition exercise.
Justice Inyang Ekwo directed the State Government to appear before the court on January 18 to explain the freezing of the N30 billion in the affected bank accounts, earmarked for the Incorporated Trustees of Masallacin Eid Shop Owners.
The judge granted a garnishee order nisi against accounts held by the Kano State Government in over 20 commercial banks including the State’s Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) account.
Background
The Incorporated Trustees of Masalachi Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association had filed a suit against the state government.
The applicants, including Alhaji Awalu Sai’du, Ifeanyi Nwobodo, Alhaji Sani Uba, and others, sought N30 billion as damages for the alleged illegal demolition of their shops by the state in June 2023.
The order freezes funds of the Kano State government, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority, and others, amounting to N30 billion.
The court also instructed garnishees to appear and show cause why the temporary order should not be made absolute against them.
